Jakarta (ANTARA) - Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, is preparing to welcome an Airbus A380 later this month, marking the first time in years that the world’s largest passenger aircraft will land at the airport.
However, InJourney Airports Corporate Secretary Group Head Arie Ahsanurrohim clarified that the flight will not be a regular scheduled service.
The charter flight is being deployed specifically to transport European football clubs visiting Indonesia for their pre-season tour.
"The Emirates Airbus A380-800 flight to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport will take place on a one-off basis on August 8, 2026," Ahsanurrohim said in a statement Saturday.
"There are no additional scheduled flights for this aircraft type following this arrival."
Soekarno-Hatta International Airport General Manager Heru Karyadi confirmed that the airport is fully equipped to handle the superjumbo aircraft, backed by its three runways and specialized ground support facilities.
The arrival coincides with the "Indonesia Super Cup 2026," featuring a marquee pre-season match between English Premier League side Chelsea and Italian Serie A club AC Milan at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta on August 8.
Nine Sport Inc. founder and promoter Arif Putra Wicaksono confirmed during a July 28 press conference that both clubs will field star-studded squads.
High-profile players expected to feature in the match include Cole Palmer, João Félix, and Luka Modrić.
Wicaksono added that while Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández is currently on extended rest following the 2026 World Cup, there remains a possibility he could join the squad in Jakarta.
The exhibition match, which will be broadcast live across 70 countries, has already drawn significant fanfare, with over 50 percent of tickets sold.
