Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Tourism Ministry is intensifying coordination with all stakeholders to help domestic and international tourists affected by the eruption of Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait.
Ministry Spokesperson Imam Priyono on Wednesday told ANTARA that his side is coordinating with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), and Banten and Lampung provincial authorities, as well as other agencies, for the effort.
The Tourism Ministry is coordinating with hotel and tourism area operators in Banten and sites near the airports to activate the force majeure procedure, provide emergency waiting rooms, and allow leniency on check-out times for passengers affected by flight delays, he said.
They are also instructed to clean volcanic ash in public facilities according to safety procedures, maintain real-time air quality monitoring, and prepare evacuation routes.
Priyono said that the ministry is calculating the losses in the tourism industry due to the Anak Krakatau eruption by pooling and verifying data from local authorities, industry associations, and tourism operators.
They will take into account the decline of occupancy rates at tourism destinations, operational issues due to volcanic ash, and damages to facilities affected by the eruption.
"The calculation is taking place to help us formulate the post-disaster recovery measures," he stated.
Meanwhile, Priyono said that the Tourism Ministry is taking measures to improve tourism safety in volcanoes, including by imposing daily tourist quotas and ensuring adequate safety equipment and facilities such as assembly points, disaster risk signs, and monitoring outposts.
He said that the safety improvement is necessary as Indonesia has 127 active volcanoes and is a popular destination for extreme tourism such as hiking.
The ministry, through its deputy for resources and institutions, will also set up a tourism safety improvement training program in all of Indonesia's 38 provinces, the spokesperson said.
The training program aims to improve the knowledge and capability of human resources in the tourism sector to mitigate risks in tourism areas and in responding to emergencies, he remarked.
