Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is strengthening post-consumer packaging management to accelerate manufacturing's transition to a green industry, aiming to improve competitiveness, expand the circular economy and support the sector's net-zero emissions target by 2050.
Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the green industry is a cornerstone of Indonesia's industrial strategy to ensure long-term sustainability and strengthen global competitiveness.
He said the strategy extends beyond cutting emissions, creating added value through higher production efficiency, technological innovation and a stronger circular economy.
"The transition to a green industry is a strategic step to strengthen national industrial competitiveness as global demand for sustainable products continues to rise," Kartasasmita said in a statement released on Friday.
He said advancing the circular economy requires stronger collaboration among the government, businesses, academia and other stakeholders.
The Industry Ministry has prepared an industrial decarbonization roadmap for priority manufacturing subsectors, including food and beverages, which it sees as offering significant circular economy potential.
Acting Director General of Agro-Industry Putu Juli Ardika said effective post-consumer packaging management is a key element of sustainable industrial transformation.
A Sustainable Waste Indonesia study found polypropylene accounts for 36 percent of domestic plastic use, followed by low-density polyethylene at 17 percent and high-density polyethylene at 14 percent.
Polyethylene terephthalate, commonly used for beverage bottles, represents about 9 percent of Indonesia's total plastic consumption.
Despite its smaller share, PET bottles offer strong circular economy potential because of their relatively high collection and recycling rates.
Ministry Director of Beverage, Tobacco Products and Refreshments Industries Merrijantij Punguan Pintaria said Indonesia generates an estimated 435,000 metric tons of PET bottle waste annually, with 307,000 metric tons collected.
That translates into a PET bottle recycling rate of about 71 percent, underscoring the material's substantial economic value across the recycling supply chain.
The ministry has launched development programs to expand green industry and circular economy practices across the beverage industry.
The initiatives will assess current industry practices, identify implementation challenges and strengthen cooperation among government agencies, businesses, academia and environmental organizations.
The findings will support technical assistance for selected beverage companies, followed by policy recommendations and an industry action plan developed through a dedicated forum.
